One is dealing with the broad issues that concern re-connect members as retired people and may be pursued through the affiliations which re-connect has.
So, such matters as levels of state pensions and benefits, and pensions legislation are issues which the National Pensioners' Convention campaigns on and re-connect is affiliated to the NPC and so, in broad terms, supports them in these aims. But we also make direct contributions to pensions legislation. We do this in our own right, or through Connect or via the TUC. We have a considerable and creditable record of commenting on draft pensions legislation over the years, be they green papers, white papers or simple consultative documents. Where resources permit - that is where members, EC or otherwise, can find the time - we also participate in regional bodies such as the London Regional National Pensioners' Convention.
Of equal importance, we deal with issues for members as individuals - such as examples of a misapplication of income tax rules: (members may recall a case reported previously on this page to do with the "Newstart" legislation)
Where a specific issue for an individual needs dedicated professional expertise, we can usually arrange for this to be provided from Connect head office: - see the "What is reconnect?" page of this website. But it would be a crabbed and limited organisation which pursued only pensions issues for pensioners. There are concerns about equality and discrimination which are matters for us all regardless of age or employment status. As an Executive Committee re-connect keeps an eye on the news and maintains affiliations to Amnesty International and the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom. |
